During the last ten years, a fundamental change has occurred in the field of biology: Molecular methods are being applied in all biological disciplines. In addition to being commonly used in biochemistry, genetics, and cell biology, molecular methods are now also being applied in physiology, developmental biology, neuroscience, and behavior research, as well as in morphology, systematics, taxonomy, and ecology. Since animals, plants, microorganisms, and humans are all being examined with both molecular and cell biological methods, the traditional barriers between the classical subjects botany, zoology, anthropology, and microbiology are no longer in place. This development has led to a surprising opening of biological subjects for those biologists who have a strong focus on molecular biology and has resulted in a remarkable improvement of their career perspectives. At the same time, the demand for specialists of any kind who are thoroughly trained in molecular biological methods has increased considerably due to current genome research and proteomics in relation to biomedicine.

A degree program comes with many subject-related questions. This page contains all the information on how to structure your degree program, including details about the course structure, modules offered, and detailed module descriptions. Additionally, the necessary forms for registering your project work and bachelor’s thesis have been compiled here. Do you have further questions and are looking for individual advising? Do you already know our Academic Advisory Office? You can find the responsible advisor’s contact information in the service section of this page.

Finished filling out the form? If so, the only things you still need are your signature, your supervisor’s signature, and โ€” for theses written outside the Faculty of Biology โ€” the faculty representative’s signature.

The bachelorโ€™s degree program in biology aims to convey the fundamentals of biology and related disciplines. A particular focus is on practical orientation and methodological competence. After successfully completing the program of study, students are able to independently perform assigned tasks within the subject of study. The bachelorโ€™s degree (B.Sc.) constitutes a first academic degree, qualifying graduates for the job market.

Often, students specialize further with one of the consecutive masterโ€™s degree programs in the life sciences. Typical employers for graduates of the program are NGOs (e.g., the Society for Nature Conservation and Ornithology [Gesellschaft fรผr Naturschutz und Ornithologie]; German Federation for the Environment and Nature Conservation [BUND]), the pharmaceutical and agricultural industries (intermediate management in each case), publishing houses, and public authorities. Entry opportunities also exist in the fields of management consultancy and journalism as well as with service providers (e.g., clinical monitoring).
