I define myself as an evolutionary ecologist, aiming to understand diversity in evolved solutions to life\\u2019s problems. My research topics over the years have ranged from sexual reproduction and sex role evolution to ageing, dispersal and migration, and social evolution. In each case, I bring in the mathematical and computational expertise to a project, often collaborating with others who have expertise on a particular taxon in experimental or field work settings. I finished my PhD at the University of Helsinki in Finland, and have since held various positions in England (Cambridge), Scotland (Glasgow), Australia (ANU), Switzerland (Zurich) and, since 2023, at the JGU in Mainz, as a result of receiving the Alexander von Humboldt Professorship Award. My endeavours have been recognized with prizes such as the ASAB\\u2019s Outstanding New Researcher Award, the British Ecological Society\\u2019s Founders\\u2019 Price, the Oikos Per Brinck Award, and the 2025 medal of the Association for the Study of Animal Behaviour.
