Starting your studies in winter semester: April 01 until May 15<\/p>\n\n\n<\/jgu-base-accordionitem>\n\n\n \n\n

In general, anyone who has completed or is about to complete a bachelor’s degree in biology, another natural science, medicine, mathematics, forensic science, or computer science is eligible for this master’s degree program. Applicants must have earned a total of at least 27 credits in courses related to evolutionary biology, biostatistics, or bioinformatics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The application process is conducted through the study portal of Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz, JOGU-StINe<\/a>. In addition to the usual documents, you will be required to fill out and submit an admission form (“Aufnahmebogen”). This helps us gain an overview of your previous core study areas and determine if you meet the aforementioned admission requirements. Applicants who meet the formal admission requirements will be invited to an interview via email. The interview is not an examination but rather serves to assess applicants’ qualifications and provide you with guidance on whether this program is suitable for you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We will then evaluate the interview. The final decision regarding admission is based on the evaluation of the interview and the grade in the bachelor’s degree using a weighted ratio of 4:6.<\/p>\n\n\n<\/jgu-base-accordionitem>\n\n\n \n\n

It is very important that you have attended a certain number of evolutionary biology courses during your bachelor’s degree program. A typical biology degree earned in Germany or abroad usually suffices for admission.<\/p>\n\n\n<\/jgu-base-accordionitem>\n\n\n \n\n

We are keen on allowing non-biologists access to this program as well. Since applicants who have not studied biology typically have not attended any evolutionary biology courses in their bachelor’s degree program, we also accept credits earned through courses in computer science, mathematics, and biostatistics as substitutes. However, you must also possess basic knowledge in the field of genetics, which will be assessed during the interview. Within module M5 “Additional Qualifications” of the master’s program in evolutionary biology, students have the opportunity to earn 10 credits by attending courses that strengthen key transferable skills and go beyond the traditional boundaries of the subject of biology. These courses are deliberately non-biological in nature, meaning they are not typically offered by biological institutes and are designed to broaden your academic and professional skill set beyond the field of biology.A wide range of suitable courses is offered by various departments at JGU Mainz, including the:<\/p>\n\n\n\n \n<\/jgu-base-buttonitem>\n\n<\/jgu-base-buttonitem>\n\n<\/jgu-base-buttonitem>\n\n<\/jgu-base-buttonitem>\n\n<\/jgu-base-buttonitem>\n\n<\/jgu-base-button>\n\n\n

In addition to these, the faculty members in the subject of Evolutionary Biology offer soft skill courses <\/strong>that are specially coordinated with the course program. These events are specifically organized for students of the degree program and should be given priority when making your selection. These internal M5 courses are also available upon request to students from other biology-related master’s programs and PhD candidates in biology at JGU Mainz.
