During the last ten years, a fundamental change has occurred in the field of biology<\/strong>: Molecular methods are being applied in all biological disciplines<\/strong>. In addition to being commonly used in biochemistry<\/strong>, genetics<\/strong>, and cell biology<\/strong>, molecular methods<\/strong> are now also being applied in physiology<\/strong>, developmental biology<\/strong>, neuroscience<\/strong>, and behavior research<\/strong>, as well as in morphology<\/strong>, systematics<\/strong>, taxonomy<\/strong>, and ecology<\/strong>. Since animals, plants, microorganisms, and humans are all being examined with both molecular and cell biological methods,<\/strong> the traditional barriers between the classical subjects botany, zoology, anthropology, and microbiology are no longer in place. This development has led to a surprising opening of biological subjects<\/strong> for those biologists who have a strong focus on molecular biology and has resulted in a remarkable improvement of their career perspectives. At the same time, the demand for specialists of any kind<\/strong> who are thoroughly trained in molecular biological methods has increased considerably due to current genome research and proteomics i<\/strong>n relation to biomedicine<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The bachelor\u2019s degree program in biology aims to convey the fundamentals of biology and related disciplines. A particular focus is on practical orientation and methodological competence. After successfully completing the program of study, students are able to independently perform assigned tasks within the subject of study. The bachelor\u2019s degree (B.Sc.) constitutes a first academic degree, qualifying graduates for the job market.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Often, students specialize further with one of the consecutive master\u2019s degree programs in the life sciences. Typical employers for graduates of the program are NGOs (e.g., the Society for Nature Conservation and Ornithology [Gesellschaft f\u00fcr Naturschutz und Ornithologie]; German Federation for the Environment and Nature Conservation [BUND]), the pharmaceutical and agricultural industries (intermediate management in each case), publishing houses, and public authorities. Entry opportunities also exist in the fields of management consultancy and journalism as well as with service providers (e.g., clinical monitoring).<\/p>\n\n\n\n \n<\/jgu-base-buttonitem>\n\n<\/jgu-base-button>\n\n\n
