New process for the registration and application for acceptance as doctoral student:

From September 18, 2017 onwards every person who wishes to apply for acceptance as doctoral student at the Faculty of Biology will need to register online first. The german portal will open on September 18, 2017 and the english registration portal will be provided at a later stage, potentially at the beginning of October 2017. Please refer to the former application process at the end of this page until then.

Should you have received your degree certificates outside of Germany, you will additionally need to apply for the regocnition of your certificates at the International Office before registering online!

In the online registration form you will be required to provide the title of your dissertation as well as the name(s) of your supervisor and co-supervisor. The name and compliance of the co-supervisor is needed upon registration if your supervisor does not belong to the Faculty of Biology or if he or she is not coopted at the Faculty of Biology. Please note that co-supervisors currently either need to be a professor at the Faculty of Biology or need to have finished their "Habilitation". The co-supervisor will then be the main examiner for your dissertation.

Afterwards the registration form must be printed and signed by you as well as your supervisor and co-supervisor. Together with all other required documents (degree certificates, recognition of your foreign degree certificates) needed, the signed form can be handed in at the dean's office during the opening times given on our website.

If you fulfill all prerequsites for the acceptance as doctoral student at the Faculty of Biology, the dean's office will provide a letter of acceptance ("Annahmebescheid"). The date of this letter is also your official start date of your dissertation. Upon issuing this letter the registration process is completed.

Should you additionally plan to enrol as doctoral student at JGU (to receive further benefits, e.g. "Semesterticket", voting rights in group 2), you can indicate this during the online registration process. If this is the case, the dean's office will forward your letter of acceptance to the "Studierendensekretariat". They will then contact you for all further steps. Please note that you will need to pay a "Semesterbeitrag" twice a year according to the fee regulations of JGU then.

Your registration as doctoral student of JGU ends if you complete your dissertation with the final exam, choose to end your dissertation work, leave the JGU or if the supervison is not guaranteed anymore.

Regulation for non-german speaking candidates (until potentially October 2017):

In order to be admitted as doctoral candidate to the Faculty of Biology, you have to submit an application for admission to the Dean of the Faculty of Biology. The form needed is available as download in the right column or as printout at the Dean's Office in Dietrich Gresemund Weg 2 (behind "Alte Mensa").

We require you to provide the following with your application:

  • Certifcate of recognition of your degree by International Incoming Department of JGU (if your final degree has been obtained outside of Germany)
  • your personal data
  • working title of your dissertation
  • name and signature of your first supervisor
  • name and signature of second or co-supervisor (if required; see below)

You need a second or co-supervisor if your doctoral studies are done outside of the Faculty of Biology (e.g. IMB, Faculty of Medicine etc.), unless the advisor of the external institution has been co-opted by the Faculty of Biology. Co-supervisors have to be full-time faculty members and conduct the examination in the specialist area. Applications for admission should be submitted as early as possible, i.e. at the beginning of the experimental phase of the dissertation process.

Should you additionally plan to enrol as doctoral student at JGU (to receive further benefits, e.g. "Semesterticket"), you need to register online with the "Studierendensekretariat" and print the form afterwards, fill that out, get signatures from your supervisors again and bring that form to the Dean's Office to get it validated. This is best done together with our application for admission as doctoral student.

Doctoral students who have already been accepted by the Faculty of Biology and have not finshed their dissertation will also be asked to register online. We ask for your cooperation, as JGU is required by law to register all current doctoral students.
